| Here I must soapbox. Pittsburgh has more bridges than any city in the world other than Venice. Hopefully, the bridges of Venice don't have gaping holes in them! This is the Homestead High Level bridge --- and it has two pedestrian sidewalks. One has been closed for at least a year, and the other is now beginning to crumble and disintegrate. There are now a few pretty large holes growing in it. This is one of them --- the concrete around the edge is fragile enough that it crumbles to dust if you touch it with your fingers. Through the hole, although it's hard to see, you can clearly make out the river several hundred feet below. The only thing between you and the water is some flimsy rebar, that big pipe, and a net that lies beneath the pipe (soon, it seems the hole will extend past the netting and the pipe). |
